This scene is inspired by the forgotten people and places of the world and the experience of coming into contact with them. An alley is an area placed between two important areas of human interaction, like an apartment block or restaurant. I’ve explored this empty space by literally shining a light on what we see as irrelevant or insignificant happenings there. The cats represent this, and they react to outside stimuli.
Over the course the animation the cats have a more and more direct connection to the outside world and are put in more and more dangerous situations, ending with a police car and helicopter arriving to catch them off-guard, an ominous ending showing societies attitudes to those who don’t fit in.
I hope to provoke people to consider those who we ignore and choose not to engage with. By using cats and funny situations, I believe we are more open to engaging with the piece. So as the peril for the cats grows, we take a more compassionate view of those who live on the edges of society.
